How to Reset a Router’s Password
Not surprisingly, while staying connected to a local area network, it happens that a particular computer cannot get connected to the internet. The reasons can simply be dished out as: either there is a problem with the network connections or the settings of the router may not be correct. For the router settings, a simple change in the settings can solve the problem.
What if, one is not being able to login to the configuration settings page of the router? Well, one can try to login with the default password given for logging on to the settings page. If this fails, one can try passwords like ‘admin’, ‘1234’, ‘password’ or the name of the manufacturing company of the router. Even if these passwords fail to work things out the way it is desired then one can search for some websites where lists of default passwords for routers are provided.
If one finds that many of the enlisted passwords are not functional at all, then it might have been someone who has changed the passwords. So what can be done in such a case? It is not likely to buy a new router for this reason or send it to the service centre for a solution. Resetting the configuration settings of the router is one of the best solutions in this case. It is easy to do and won’t cost a penny.
When the settings of a router are reset, it is done manually – that is what we call a “hardware reset”. This reset assures that all the configurations of the router are reset back to the manufacturer/default settings. Since all the current desired settings of the router are lost, it is often advisable to write down the configuration settings details after changing them each time.
How to hardware reset the router?
The connection ports (Ethernet, power, connection, etc.) of the router are placed at the back of the device. There, along with these ports will be a small hole. You can use a pin in it and press to reset the router to factory settings.
Once this is done, you can restart the router and try to login with the default password given in the manual. One can thus log in to the configuration settings page, change the access password and also change the settings as per requirement. While setting the new configurations, it is advised to write down the settings, so that in future if one needs to reset the router again, the setting information is saved for his convenience.
For security purposes, it is always recommended that one should always use a strong password. Hacking seems to be easy when you know it complete. Illegal access to routers using telnet is an easy task for many people. To stop this unwanted access, the port number specification – which is generally kept as 80 or 23 – can be set to some rare unused port number. This will ensure that your router’s password will be less prone to dangers by other network users.
Yet, if the problem reoccurs there is always the provision for the one touch hardware reset option for routers.
