Setting passwords is quite a task – be it for logging on to windows or accessing email accounts, we are always worried when it comes to password. It has to be strong and difficult to guess for others. But while generating a password which is difficult to guess by others, we sometimes tend to make it so difficult that we even forget it ourselves.

When one forgets his own set password to his email account, he/she goes for password retrieval – where the correct password is sent to an alternative email account after some user verification process. But when a password for logging on to Windows slips out of the mind – what can be done? There remains no other option other than resetting the password. But how can we reset a Windows password without logging on to Windows?

The Methodologies:

There are several ways to reset a Windows password depending on the workplace of the computer. If the computer is on a domain, the network administrator can reset the Windows password. It is very easy, but comes along with some risks. If the computer is a standalone machine then there are two options.

First, if there are multiple users and the forgotten password belongs to one of the users other than the administrator, the administrator can log on to Windows and reset the user’s password and create a new password for the user.

Second, if there is just one user (administrator) and the password has been forgotten – one can reset the password.

So how do we reset the password?

When the log on screen appears and the entered password turns out to be incorrect, one can use a password reset disk to reset the password. An error message appears when the password is incorrect. After closing the message box, one automatically goes back to the log on screen. There is a reset password option in that screen. When that option is selected, a password reset wizard appears.

This wizard takes one through a number of steps for resetting the password. But for doing this one has to have a password reset disk. In the process of resetting the password, the wizard asks for the removable drive (it can be a disk or a memory stick or even a floppy disk). Once the disk is inserted, the wizard resets the password and asks for a new password.

How to create a password reset disk?

There is an option for creating a password reset disk at the user account details. One can follow the steps mentioned and create a password reset disk easily.

What if, there isn’t any password reset disk?

Well, if there is no password reset disk, then one will have to go for a tool called Active password changer to crack the password and change it to something else.

It is always advisable to have a password which is easy to remember. Otherwise, to reset a windows password, one will require a password reset disk. With the reset disk in hand, forgetting passwords won’t cause much of a trouble.

The “administrator password” of your PC is the password used to access the “Administrator” account. Most people are not aware of its existence because this account rarely shows up on the screen. But sometimes, your PC may ask for this password. What do you do if you don’t know it? There are some ways in which you can reset the administrator password of your PC.

Your hard disk may have crashed.  You have decided you need data recovery for all your important files. For this you will need the administrator password. Most computers have only one administrator account and that means you cannot log in using another account. There are many ways to reset the administrator password of your PC. One thing you can try is installing the hard drive as a slave into another computer. This will let you gain access in some cases. Another thing you can do is install a second copy of the operating system in your computer. This may let you gain access. The problem with these methods is that they are not easy and time-consuming. Following are some easy methods you can use to rest the administrator password of your PC.

  • You can try to restore your PC to a backed up System State (in Windows 2000/XP/2003) or an ERD (in NT 4.0). Something which you do know the password of. The trouble with this approach is that, your recently added groups and users will probably be lost. You will also lose all the changed passwords of your user accounts since the time you did your last back up.
  • Or you can go online for help. The administrator password can be decrypted. This will allow you to show the original password and you may not even change it. For this, go to http://www.loginrecovery.com and follow the instructions. They will ask you to download a program on another computer. You will need an internet connection for this. The program will extract the password. After that the encrypted password has to be submitted to the site. Then they will recover the lost password for you. The great thing about this site is that you will not lose your EFS encrypted files because the administrator password remains unchanged!
  • One of the best online administrator password resetting sites today is the

http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/. Visit the site and follow the instructions. The major reason for its popularity is that it is free. But even when you forget that, this program is by far the easiest to use. What this site’s program does is that, it modifies the encrypted password, thus allowing you to gain access of your administrator account. You can set a new password here and you don’t need to know your old one to do that. A great feature of this site is that it will help you unlock locked or disabled user accounts. The program offers support to Vista users too.

There are other ways by which you can reset the administrator password of your PC but the above few are the easiest and highly recommended.

There can be situations which will not allow you to get the access to your computer for any wrong reasons. Most of the times would have been the situations where you have forgotten the password. Every single individual would like to set a BIOS password to protect their computer from unauthorized usage. The Basic Input Output System will ensure the proper and synchronized usage of all the hardware and CPU parts. An employee who is quitting the office might reset the new BIOS password to take revenge on the management. This process of reversing the password is a time consuming task for the novice users. The entire process is very much dependent on the manufacturer of the motherboard and the model of it. However, it is not a daunting task to reverse the password.

For A Desktop Computer:

• First ensure that the power is turned off and the wires are unplugged in the switch box.
• Open up the case of your computer to get the mother board access.
• Find the CMOS battery which will round in shape and mostly silver metallic.
• Now remove this CMOS battery and use any tool to remove it. Keep it undisturbed for 700 seconds. This process will flush out the CMOS battery contents by which the old password will also be erased.
• Place the battery back in its position.
• On giving the power supply, the computer might give out a warning displaying that CMOS settings are not found. Try the re-configuration process or opt for the default settings.
• Now you can replace a new password according to your wish

For A Laptop:

• The process is very much complexed in the newer versions and models. If it has a security chip, then you have to contact the manufacturer to ask for the “master password”.
• If it is bootable by CD or Floppy, then create a Win98SE bootable media.
• You can also try any method to enter DOS prompt.
• When you get the A:\> prompt, then type “debug” and hit the enter button.
• The screen will display a “-“.
• Type o 70 2E (with spaces) and hit Enter
• Similarly type o 71 ff (with spaces) and hit enter button.
• Now type q and press the enter button.
• Here are the common backdoor passwords available:

• AWARD BIOS
The common passwords are AWARD SW, AWARD PW, AWARD_SW, 01322222, 589589, ZJAAADC, %äåâÿòü ïpîáåëîâ%
• AMI BIOS:
AMI_SW, HEWITT RAND, Oder, AMI,
• Some of the other common passwords used are BIOSSTAR, biosstar, ALFAROME,
The usage of these backdoor passwords is highly dependent on the manufacturer. The passwords are case sensitive. The BIOS will have a bumper like handle to identify it easily. Try locating it at the bottom. In the worst cases, your manufacturer can help you by resetting the password if you could prove that you are the owner of the system.

Not surprisingly, while staying connected to a local area network, it happens that a particular computer cannot get connected to the internet. The reasons can simply be dished out as: either there is a problem with the network connections or the settings of the router may not be correct. For the router settings, a simple change in the settings can solve the problem.

What if, one is not being able to login to the configuration settings page of the router? Well, one can try to login with the default password given for logging on to the settings page. If this fails, one can try passwords like ‘admin’, ‘1234’, ‘password’ or the name of the manufacturing company of the router. Even if these passwords fail to work things out the way it is desired then one can search for some websites where lists of default passwords for routers are provided.

If one finds that many of the enlisted passwords are not functional at all, then it might have been someone who has changed the passwords. So what can be done in such a case? It is not likely to buy a new router for this reason or send it to the service centre for a solution. Resetting the configuration settings of the router is one of the best solutions in this case. It is easy to do and won’t cost a penny.

When the settings of a router are reset, it is done manually – that is what we call a “hardware reset”. This reset assures that all the configurations of the router are reset back to the manufacturer/default settings. Since all the current desired settings of the router are lost, it is often advisable to write down the configuration settings details after changing them each time.

How to hardware reset the router?

The connection ports (Ethernet, power, connection, etc.) of the router are placed at the back of the device. There, along with these ports will be a small hole. You can use a pin in it and press to reset the router to factory settings.

Once this is done, you can restart the router and try to login with the default password given in the manual. One can thus log in to the configuration settings page, change the access password and also change the settings as per requirement. While setting the new configurations, it is advised to write down the settings, so that in future if one needs to reset the router again, the setting information is saved for his convenience.

For security purposes, it is always recommended that one should always use a strong password. Hacking seems to be easy when you know it complete. Illegal access to routers using telnet is an easy task for many people. To stop this unwanted access, the port number specification – which is generally kept as 80 or 23 – can be set to some rare unused port number. This will ensure that your router’s password will be less prone to dangers by other network users.

Yet, if the problem reoccurs there is always the provision for the one touch hardware reset option for routers.

There are multiple techniques that can be used for recovering lost windows password.

Password Hint

The easiest way to recover a lost password is to use the password hint feature (located at the side of your password prompt on the welcome screen) Take a few minutes to relax and think back why did you put your password hint at the first place.

Password Reset Disk

Thanks to Microsoft, windows operating system comes with a feature called ‘password reset disk’ which allows you to create disk to recover a lost or forgotten password. However this is only helpful when you have created the password reset disk before the moment you actually forgotten the password. This feature cannot be used if you did not create a password reset this earlier before you actually forgotten your password.

Windows Installation Fix

There is still hope if neither of the above strategies work. You need an original windows installation disk to recover a lost password, if your PC is installed with a pirated version of windows; this isn’t an option for you. Which is why, in the end, original soft copy really do pay off.

However we have to remind you that this is not the best option since ‘Windows Installation Fix’ is really a feature made to fix your PC. Even if this works, your computer will face some severe crashes due to some of the important system data being replaced during the recovery process.
